Recruitment is a key component of ensuring continuation of your MAV chapter. Recruitment is an ongoing process of introducing students to the organization, and giving them an opportunity to invest in the organization. Recruitment can be challenging, especially during an organizations infancy. Below are four recruiting tactics to encourage student interest in becoming a part of the solution to end senseless violence. Recruitment is like a table: it needs all four legs to balance properly. Faculty & Staff Recommendations

A great way to identify potential leaders for the organization is by soliciting names from faculty and staff members. These folks see students regularly, and interact with students with the qualities important for being leaders in MAV (engaged, critically thinking, mature, articulate, etc.). Attached is a sample MAV recommendation form to distribute to allies with access to students (see list of offices and departments under Step 1.

Tabling is a way to engage passersby on multiple levels. Simply having a group of men together at a table, not associated with a fraternity, sport club, or religious order is a great way to raise peoples curiosity. It also allows people to interact with the group on a level with which they are comfortable. People have the opportunity to simply notice the name (a great form of awareness), take literature, or talk to one of the members about the organization. Setting up a table with a sign-up sheet to gather names and contact information for the interest meeting (and subsequent meetings) is a great way to engage potential members.

Advertising the existence of your organization is the key to spreading awareness about your work and enticing people that want to be a part of that work. As you prepare for your first interest meeting and Kickoff Banquet, contact your University newspaper or radio station and pitch the idea to them. They are often looking for special interest stories that involve important issues for students. Violence prevention is one of those issues. Several University papers and television stations also have Event Calendars that where groups advertise meetings and events.

Flyering is another form of outreach, known as passive education. Simply posting flyers around campus and around town is an easy way to get the word out about your meetings. Simply reproduce the sample MAV Interest Meeting Flyer attached, or create your own professional, eye catching flyer using your university resources.

One of the most effective ways to capture the interest of potential members is by conducting presentations and hosting events. Often times, when men see the work being done by the organization first hand, they are more prone to show interest, because they respect the work on some level. Always make sure to have a MAV interest sign-up sheet and MAV brochures at all presentations and events.
